The 2019/2020 Serie A season begins in a couple of hours’ times. After 3 months break which saw certain tournaments like the Copa America and Afcon go on, the Serie A is back once again. The new Serie A season promises a lot of aggressiveness, tackles, show of strength and grittiness.

The Serie A has been dominated by Juventus over the last 8 years. To put more emphasis on their dominance, they have won all the last 8 editions of the Serie A. Every year the story looks like it will change but after a few months into the league, the story reverts to its original script.

Napoli looked like changing that script or story especially in the 2017/2018 season but ultimately fell 4 point short. The changes at the helm of affairs at Juventus and Inter Milan coupled with the transfers of those teams and Napoli shows that, a change in story might finally happen. The teams who can change the story I am talking about are Napoli and Inter Milan. The article will therefore discuss where the title can be won and lost for the two teams mentioned above and Juventus.

Having won the Serie A title for the past 8 years, it will be suicidal not to expect them to win it once again. The core of the team that won the last few editions are still there. They also have Cristiano Ronaldo, the 5-time Ballon d’or winner who has one-year experience with the Serie A champions.

The Juventus team also recruited well in the summer transfer window and they can still recruit some more with the window not closing till 2nd September. Young Ajax sensation Mathis De Ligt joined them for €85m. Aaron Ramsey also joined them after the expiration of his contract with Arsenal. Other players like Danilo, Adrien Rabiot, Luca Pellegrini, Cristian Romero, Merih Demiral and the great Gianluigi Buffon have all joined them.

These signings will significantly boost the Juventus team, one looking to win the Champions league in as many attempts. There will be competition in the team especially the midfield and this will only drive the players on to win another Serie A title. Competition they say is a necessary tool or evil to success.

Although the Juventus team has been bolstered, the defence still looks a bit light and inexperienced especially after the departure of Joao Cancelo and the signing of young defenders. The attack also looks light. There is also a new manager in charge in the name of Maurizio Sarri, a manager who has won only one title in his long career. His style of play is also new to the Juventus team. All these changes might prove to be Juventus’ undoing as they aim for the league and Champions league.

Napoli has been a team on the rise over the last few years. They have finished as runner up to Juventus in the Serie A title race for the last 2 years. The team have also retained all their key players except Marek Hamsik (all-time top scorer) who left in January to join Dalian Yifang in the Chinese Super league.

Napoli have however recruited well in this summers transfer window. They have shored up their defence with Konstatinos Manolas from Roma and Giovanni Di Lorenzo from Empoli. Goalkeepers David Opina and Alex Meret have also been signed permanently. Other players like Eljif Elmas, Michael Folorunsho and Eugenio D’Ursi have joined the team. Hirving Lozano, the exciting Mexican international joined them this morning.

The Napoli team is being handled by the experienced manager in the name of Carlo Ancelotti who is in his second year. With his experience behind the team coupled with the new signings especially the improved defence, he just might guide them to the Serie A title, the title they have been dreaming about for the last 29 years.

The shortcoming that might befall them in their attempt to win the Serie A title is their not so in-depth squad and relatively unknown signings. The lack of a lot of firepower upfront might also hinder them in their attempt to win the title. This few things might end up being their Achilles heels.

Inter Milan has been a team on the decline in recent years. The team hasn’t finished in the top 3 of the Serie A table since the 2010/2011 season where they finished 2nd behind eventual champions AC Milan. Change of managers has not helped them at all but we feel that is about to change with new boss Antonio Conte at the helm of affairs.

The Inter Milan team have not lost any key players of theirs in the transfer market. They may loose Mauro Icardi but he hasn’t been a wanted player at San Siro and doesn’t appear to feature in Conte’s plan. Besides Conte has recruited well in the transfer window bringing in extra firepower in the name of Romelu Lukaku.

The midfield has also been fortified with the signings of Mateo Politano, Valentino Lazaro, Nicolo Barella and others. The defence has also been improved with the arrival of Diego Godin while cover has been provided for goalkeeper Handanovic in the names of Ionut Radu and Gabriel Brazao.  The new signings coupled with the retained players will propel Inter from obscurity and into the light in their attempt to win the title they haven’t won for more than a decade.

If the adaptation of the team to new coach Antonio Conte’s tactics and the gelling of the new players doesn’t go well, it will be a hindrance to their dream. When it doesn’t go well, they might be looking for another change, one that will further prolong their title drought. The Inter Milan team just have to make sure they get it right this time around.
