The Premier league top 6 often looks like a solved puzzle. A puzzle that will give you the same answer no matter how many times you solve it. The answers often include the teams Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspurs and Chelsea. But other teams have managed to solve that puzzle in recent years. We can talk about Leicester City’s fairy tale win in the 2015/2016 campaign and then there is Everton’s 5th place finish in the 2013/2014 season.
These two recent examples show that it is indeed possible to break in. Manchester United and Arsenal are still finding their feet under their relatively new managers. Chelsea also has a new manager and are unable to sign any players for the next two windows [transfer ban]. With this situation, it is a good opportunity as any for some other clubs to stake a claim for the top six. But can any of them break into the premier league top 6? And which teams are most likely to achieve that feat. Here in this article, we discuss four of those teams.
PREMIER LEAGUE TOP SIX: LEICESTER CITY.
Even though Leicester City has fallen down to earth ever since they won that impossible premier league crown, they have claims to be mentioned here. Even though they have lost a key player in the name of Harry Maguire, they deserve a mentioning. That is all possible because of their top-class manager Brendan Rogers and the team he has assembled. He has retained Youri Tielemans while adding good players in the name of Ayoze Perez, Dennis Praet and James Justin to his team.
Leicester City’s attack improved after the appointment of Brendan Rodgers. Jamie Vardy was the most beneficiary. He scored 9 goals in 10 matches. Rodgers completing a full preseason with his players should help him better understand his players, and his players also understanding him. The Maguire windfall can also be injected into the team. Rodgers experience should also count. All this makes it a good chance for Rodgers and Leicester to break into the top 6.
PREMIER LEAGUE TOP 6: WOLVES.
Wolverhampton Wanderers as they are officially known were one of the excellent performers in the premier league last season. They announced themselves unto the big stage last season by beating top 6 sides like Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United. They also accumulated some draws with those sides. Under the tutelage of their talented Portuguese coach Nuno Espirito they played to their strength and it helped them in the end.
This summer their transfer dealings have been smart and impressive. They have converted their loan signings into permanent deals. Raul Jimenez and Leander Dendoncker are two of them. They have also recruited good players like Patrick Cutrone, Pedro Neto, Bruno Jordao etc. These signings will boost their already impressive squad. It just might be enough to force their way into the top 6, after all they were 7th last season.
PREMIER LEAGUE TOP SIX: EVERTON.
Everton like Wolves have also had their manager for a whole season. That should mean his players are used to his style of play, a vibrant attacking football. They finished 9th on the table last season but their signings like Lucas Digne, Andre Gomes and Richarlison were a joy to watch. Lucas Digne was involved in 8 goals, Richarlison scored 13 and Andre Gomez brought creativity to Everton’s midfield.
All these players have one-year experience under their belt with Everton. There are also the old guards like Pickford, Sigurdsson and Keane. If you add their new signings, they have made like Alex Iwobi, Moise Kean, Djibril Sididbe, Jean-Phillipe Gbamin, Fabian Delph etc., Marco Silva is building a great team. They were not too impressive last season but with one year of experience under the guidance of Marco Silva coupled with the new signings they just might make the cut and qualify for Europe.
PREMIER LEAGUE TOP SIX: WESTHAM UNITED.
Westham United are the last team discussed in this article who have a chance of breaking into the premier league top 6. They finished in 8th position last season under the experienced Manuel Pellegrini. Although they have lost Marko Arnautovic to Shanghai SIPG, they have recruited well this summer. Sebastian Haller, Pablo Fornals, Goncalo Cardoso, Albian Ajeti and Roberto have all signed on. They should make Westham stronger.
Westham United have been revolutionized under the experienced tactician Manuel Pellegrini. They now play brilliant attacking football. The players have bought into his philosophy and have a year’s worth of experience under their belt. The new signings should also improve their team. If they are going to make a case for the top six, now is a time as good as any.
