Null and Void is a term that refers to anything without legal force or effect. The phrase has become a common word for sports players, fans, team administrators and organizers nowadays. That is because of the pandemic known as covid-19 that has hit the world and sports at large. Football and other sporting events all over the globe have been brought to a halt because of this pandemic.
This new coronavirus has crippled everything in its path and football isn’t any different. The 2019/20 football season across Europe and the rest of the world has been suspended indefinitely because of this new and dangerous virus.
BEFORE COVID-19 ARRIVED.
Prior to the emergence of the disease in China in December last year, football was going on as usual and thriving as a matter of fact. Even after the emergence of the virus, football leagues across Europe went on smoothly until March 2020. That was when cases were recorded throughout Europe and the virus was declared pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO)
The 2019/20 football season was left with around 9-14 matches for many leagues before the indefinite suspension of the league. Now that the virus is gaining grounds and have no plans of slowing down especially across Europe, football fans, organizers, players and all stakeholders are in a dilemma as to when or whether the league will resume.
Players, fans, organizers and stakeholders have expressed varying opinions about the way forward. Some have called for the league season to be voided, others have called for it to be finished either behind closed doors or in front of fans when it is suitable. We here at Sports Inquisitor look at some of the things that will/should be dealt with when the league is declared null and void.
AFTERMATH OF NULL AND VOID.
Should the 2019/2020 football season across Europe be declared null and void every statistic recorded this season will be removed from history. That means goals scored or conceded, cards awarded, appearances made and others will not count. Players like Jamie Vardy, Ciro Immobile, Lionel Messi Robert Lewandowski and co who top the goal king chart in their respective countries will lose their chance to win those awards. Teams leading their domestic leagues especially Liverpool who boast an insane 25 points lead will also lose the chance to win the title.
No team will face relegation nor will teams gain promotion. What it means is that promotion hopefuls will have to fight again for that opportunity. High flying teams with chance of qualifying for Europe like Leicester, Marseille, Sheffield United etc. will also have to start again from scratch. Records set this season will also be erased. Talking about records, you can talk about Ronaldo’s record for goals scored in consecutive matches in Serie A or Liverpool’s 22 consecutive home win in the league.
The cancellation or voiding of the league, should that happen will hit some players, teams and fans hard. Some may feel it in terms of finances or some in terms of trophies or awards. The next few weeks ahead of us will tell us what will happen, but the situation isn’t looking good. What do you think will happen or should happen? Should the leagues be voided or continued?
